Partner and Founder, B2G Consulting · 1:1 Coaching · Mental Fitness
“I needed to move away from the entrepreneurship syndrome to a more CEO mindset.”
The situation
The Founder Who Could Not Let Go
Frederic had been running B2G Consulting for ten years. His firm specialised in supply chain transformation: complex, high-stakes consulting he had built from scratch. But the same qualities that had made him a successful founder were now getting in the way.
He was everywhere and in everything. Micromanaging tasks his team should own and finding himself too deep in the operational detail to think about where the business was actually going. He was working all hours, which affected his ability to spend quality time with his family.
His “Saboteur Assessment” profile told a familiar founder story. His “Controller” Saboteur did not allow him to delegate as needed – not giving his team the space or guidance for growth, and fostering an increasingly heavy dependency on him. His Hyper-Achiever tied his sense of self-worth to the success of his business, often leading him to taking things personally. And his Hyper-Rational mindset left little room for the empathy needed to manage conflict and get the most out of his team.
Frederic felt isolated, stuck in the weeds and frustrated. Operating at a scale far too small for his ambitions.
Frederic wanted to develop his leadership style, so he could scale his business and be less busy and more effective. He wanted to stop being the person who held everything up, and to start being the kind of leader who made other people better.
The work
Commercial Strategy Meets Inner Work
Frederic did the Positive Intelligence mental fitness programme and 12 x 1:1 coaching sessions.
The mental fitness programme gave him a framework for understanding his unhelpful self-talk and behavioural patterns, allowing him to access calmer, more focused and resourceful ways of thinking and behaving.
In the 1:1 work, we ran two tracks at once. On the commercial side: go-to-market strategy, business development, and how to position B2G for board-level conversations. On the personal side: conflict management, communication, and the harder work of moving from a hyper-rational stance to real emotional intelligence.
Frederic was analytically sharp and commercially astute. What he was building was the ability to bring that same rigour to his relationships: to read a room, develop his team, and stop letting other people’s reactions affect his sense of identity or self-worth.
The shift
From Bottleneck to CEO
Frederic started being more intentional about the team he was building around him, with clear scopes of work, delegation and reporting lines. The conversations he’d been trying to have with clients started happening. He had the headspace for them. And when things got difficult on a project, or in a meeting, he noticed he wasn’t reacting the same way he used to.
He stopped taking things personally. He stopped being the bottleneck. He became an active and effective mentor to his team. Relationships deepened: with his team, with his clients, with himself. He had the vision, strategy, headspace and mindset to take the business to the next level. And he did – crushing his financial targets in the process!
This extended beyond his own team to the work itself. On a project for a factory at risk of closure, Frederic spent considerable time on site. The site foreman had his own Controller tendencies, much to the detriment of his team. Frederic shared his own experience, the techniques he’d learned and the shifts he’d made, and took him under his wing. The foreman stopped being the bottleneck. The factory stayed open.
Frederic has since put several of his own clients forward for coaching. Coming from a consultant, that is a meaningful endorsement.
“I’ve been able to acknowledge my shortcomings and try not to fight them, but identify when they occur to minimise their impacts or to shift them to where I need it to be.”
